Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men and results in enlargement of the breast glands. This condition can be very concerning. This can be precipitated by different medical conditions such as increases in hormones, obesity, diabetes, alcohol and anabolic steroid use, etc. If a medical condition exists, the underlying cause must be treated first prior to any surgical intervention. The surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed with tumescent liposuction with or without the use of ultra-sound (UAL). This is performed by injecting a dilute solution of local anesthetic into the fat compartment above the pectoralis muscle and the excess fat and breast gland is then removed by liposuction. If the gland is persistent or fibrous, this procedure may be combined with a direct gland excision. A direct gland excision is performed through a small peri-areolar incision. Patients can have this procedure done and return relatively quickly to their daily activities.
